City Harvest, a wonderful organization seeking to fight hunger in New York City, approached us with the opportunity to donate a gift for their goodie bags at this year's Bid Against Hunger dinner. The dinner will take place this evening, Oct. 19th, with the hope of raising money through an auction.
This prompted some further research into what City Harvest was all about, as up until then I was unfamiliar with them. Their website, www.cityharvest.org, is full of information on the organization, ways to help, and some staggering facts on the harsh realities of hunger in New York City.
Some key statistics they list:
"1.5 million New Yorkers currently live in poverty, struggling to afford basic necessities such as rent and medical care and put food on their tables.
City Harvest helps feed over 260,000 people each week.
- We rescue nearly 77,000 pounds of food each day.
- We regularly give food to nearly 600 community programs.
- It costs City Harvest 23 cents to rescue a pound of food.
In our first month, City Harvest served 55 community food programs in New York City. Today we help feed people at nearly 600 programs. Our goal is to grow our operations to address the demand for emergency food." (http://www.cityharvest.org/hunger-in-nyc/hunger-statistics)
